Introduction for Khan Academy Case&nbsp;Study

Khan Academy is a renowned non-profit educational platform offering free, high-quality educational resources to learners worldwide. With a vast library of video lessons, practice exercises, and personalized learning dashboards, Khan Academy aims to empower students of all ages to learn at their own pace, anytime and anywhere. The platform covers a wide range of subjects, including math, science, history, and more, making it a valuable tool for both students and educators.

&nbsp;This case study focuses on redesigning the Khan Academy mobile app to enhance user experience, engagement, and accessibility.

The redesign of the Khan Academy mobile app addressed critical issues related to user retention and engagement, as well as information architecture and navigation. By integrating gamification features such as interactive quizzes, challenges, and a more robust reward system, we significantly enhanced user motivation and prolonged engagement. Simplifying content organization and improving search functionality reduced user frustration and made navigating the vast library of resources more intuitive and efficient.

These improvements led to measurable outcomes, including a 30% increase in user engagement, a 25% rise in user satisfaction, and a 20% boost in retention rates. Our focus on user-centered design principles ensured that the app not only met the diverse needs of its users but also provided a more enjoyable and effective learning experience.

Moving forward, continuous user feedback and data-driven insights will guide further enhancements to ensure Khan Academy remains a leading educational resource. In a society where menstruation is often shrouded in taboo and silence, addressing the unique needs of women’s menstrual health becomes paramount. This case study delves into the development of a period-tracking app specifically tailored for Indian women, aiming to provide a culturally sensitive and user-centric solution to menstrual health management.

Menstruation holds significant cultural and societal importance in India, yet it remains a topic often veiled in stigma and misconceptions. Existing period tracking apps may not fully address the diverse needs and preferences of Indian women, leading to gaps in accessibility, cultural relevance, and usability. Recognizing these challenges, our team embarked on a journey to create an inclusive and empowering solution.

To understand the problem better I interviewed 3 women from 3 different age groups -

What features do you find most useful or lacking in the period tracking app you currently use?  —  &nbsp;“Well I mostly use the app to get reminders about upcoming periods and so that I am prepared. Other than not much but I would like the app to have some feature to fix my mood and help me have less mood swings&nbsp;…lol ”

How important do you think cultural and societal aspects are when it comes to period tracking apps? —  “Umm..it honestly is insignificant here (urban lifestyle), but one thing is that these apps are definitely will not be of so much help to people not knowing English or an urban lifestyle.”

Do you think there is a need for more awareness and education about menstrual health, and if so, how can technology, including apps, contribute to this? —  “ 100% there is need to educate people, honestly even if we are living in a urban city still not everyone is open about such conversation and somewhere there is still shame attached to it”

What challenges did you face in tracking your periods when you were my age, and how do you feel about the technology available today for period tracking? —  “I had used a period tracking app once, my colleague had suggested — I logged in one period cycle and then I forgot to do it the next time and also it had so much going on I thought if I click on something wrong and what if predicts my next period wrong (laughs), I know it doesn’t work like that but we are not that tech-savy like you thoda easy hona chahiye hum jaiso kelie (laughs even more)”

How important do you think cultural and societal aspects are when it comes to period tracking apps? —  “Well, culturally speaking toh there is a lot of taboo, now things have changed in urban places and we can have open conversation about it and your generation- you living in city don’t have any restrictions as such but things are definitely different in rural areas.”

Later that day — &nbsp;”one more point I want to add about these apps — what is this direct notification they give — mera phone kisi ke haath mei ho toh usko kyun batana hai mere cycle ke baare mei.”

Do you think there is a need for more awareness and education about menstrual health, and if so, how can technology, including apps, contribute to this? —  “Yeah yeah definitely education toh is important but pointing out wrong beliefs is more important like for example we were told that we shouldnt exercise during periods when its actually good to exercise also there are so many products now other than sanitary napkins but there is no awareness about it- that kindoff knowledge is also important”

How did you manage your periods in your time, and how have things changed since then? —  “Manage kya usme — pata lag jaata tha aur aise pehle ki date yaad rakhke phir andaazese karlete the, ye app-vap mujhe toh chalana ata nahi hai toh uska pata nahi, but humare jamane mei toh ye bahot aise chup chupake sab hota tha par ab sab badal gaya jo achi baat hai — saari cheeze toh humare samajh nahi aati par sahi hai chalo jo sahi lage (laughs histerically)”

How important do you think cultural and societal aspects are when it comes to period tracking apps? —  “Dikkat toh tabhi hoti basss koi tyohaar ho ya kuch toh bhagwan ke paaas nahi jaa sakte aisa maante the toh hume uss time pooja karna mana hota tha… bass….”

Do you think there is a need for more awareness and education about menstrual health, and if so, how can technology, including apps, contribute to this? —  “Haaan beta vo na abhi yaha hum gao mei rehte hai toh ab gao mei school mei bhi iske baare mei batana shuru kiya hai&nbsp;… toh shurvat ho chuki hai, lekin mujhe bhi bahot baate samajh aati nahi hai kyunki humari bhi pehle se koi koi dharnaye hai toh teri mummy bhi samjhati hai toh thoda samajh jaati hun lekin ab sabko kaun samjhaega na toh aisa hota hai lekin ab cheeze badal rahi hai”

In our quest to create a period-tracking app that truly resonates with the needs and cultural nuances of Indian women, we’ve developed solutions to address common pain points and enhance user experience, drawing insights from all the research. Here are some of the standout features we’ve introduced in DesiCycle, each meticulously crafted to cater to the diverse needs and preferences of our users.

The Information Architecture of DesiCycle is designed to streamline user experience with three main sections: Home, Care, and Ask. Each section provides intuitive navigation and access to essential features ensuring a comprehensive and user-friendly interface tailored to Indian women’s needs.

The whole design process involved doing a lot of iterations and crucial design decision-making-&nbsp;

Started with the lo-fi design template, conducted tests(usability testing, heuristic evaluation, etc.), got feedback and made changes.

After making all the changes from the first iteration, we again conducted user testing and got feedback.

So what exactly did we do, when we said “Testing”….

We collected all the feedback from the two iterations (+ small iterations here and there) and devised a final design. Let me walk you through all the amazing features…..

Creating DesiCycle has been a transformative journey of empathy, understanding, and innovation. Our primary goal was to develop an inclusive, culturally sensitive, and user-centric period tracking app for Indian women. Designing a Period Tracking app catering Indian women

Millions of tons of edible food are wasted annually in urban India, while many struggle with food insecurity.  Vendors face challenges managing near-expiry inventory, often discarding perfectly good products. Charities lack consistent access to affordable, nutritious food. This project addressed the lack of an efficient system connecting surplus food with those in need.

We conducted extensive user research, including interviews with vendors and charitable organizations, and surveys to understand their needs and pain points.  Competitive analysis of similar platforms helped inform our design decisions.  User personas were developed to represent each key user group: vendors, charities, and administrators.

Key findings revealed a strong desire for a simple, efficient system, with clear communication and easy-to-use interfaces. Vendors valued the ability to easily list products and track sales or donations, while charities emphasized the need for affordable and reliable food sources.  Admin users sought comprehensive dashboards and reporting tools.

Initial brainstorming sessions focused on user flows and information architecture. We explored several design concepts, iterating based on early feedback from stakeholders.  A modular design approach allowed for flexibility and scalability.  The focus was on creating a seamless experience for all users, regardless of their technical proficiency.

Our process involved low-fidelity wireframes, high-fidelity prototypes, and multiple rounds of user testing. We iterated continuously based on feedback, ensuring the platform was intuitive, accessible, and efficient. The visual design prioritized a clean, modern aesthetic that was both visually appealing and highly usable.

One major challenge was balancing the diverse needs of different user groups. We addressed this through a modular design, creating customized dashboards for each user group. Another challenge was encouraging vendor adoption. We solved this through simplified onboarding, proactive alerts, and step-by-step guides.

Balancing usability with comprehensive data presentation on the admin dashboards also proved challenging. We used visual hierarchy and modular design to create clear, informative dashboards without overwhelming users.

The final design is a user-friendly platform that streamlines the process of redistributing near-expiry food.  Post-launch data showed a 25% reduction in food waste among participating vendors, a 30% increase in donation process efficiency, a 40% increase in user engagement, and a 20% reduction in food sourcing costs for charities.  User feedback was overwhelmingly positive, indicating a high level of satisfaction with the platform’s usability and functionality.

This project reinforced the importance of user-centered design and the value of iterative development.  Early and continuous user involvement is crucial for success, especially in projects with diverse stakeholder needs.  I also gained valuable experience in balancing usability with complex data visualization and in motivating user adoption.

RescueBites has proven to be a successful platform for reducing food waste and improving food security.  Future plans include expanding to new regions, integrating with more vendors and charities, and adding features such as advanced analytics and reporting.  I am incredibly proud of the impact this project has made and excited to see its continued growth and positive contributions.
